The Sanford House located right near Historic Downtown Fayetteville is owned by the Woman’s Club of Fayetteville. According to legend the hauntings date back all the way to the Civil War, where a young couple attempted to flee the approaching Union Army. However, the tunnel was blown up and the bodies were never recovered. Since then, the woman’s apparition has been sighted in the staircase and has been dubbed the “Lady in Black”. However, an alternate depiction of this same specter is that it may actually be the wife of Sanford, watching over her children after her passing. The man is said to haunt the rented out apartments and tenets have reported having an unseen companion as they try to enjoy watching television. This includes indentations on the couch and unexplained channel changes.
